Paris turns the shock into a demonstration
Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Villarreal 6-0 on Tuesday night at the Estadio de la Cerámica, in the fourth round of Champions League group stage matches. The defending champions thus maintain their lead in the group stage with four wins in four games and confirm their impressive European form.
Luis Enrique's players imposed their rhythm from the opening minutes. Their pressing, technical precision, and movement quickly disorganized a Spanish team that was unable to breathe. Paris also recorded their biggest ever away win in the competition.
Four goals in seventeen minutes
João Neves opened the scoring in the 9th minute after a deflection from Willian Pacho on a corner. Three minutes later, Désiré Doué found the top corner from the edge of the box. Senny Mayulu then pounced on a rebound to make it 3-0 in the 13th minute.
Fabián Ruiz capped off this incredible sequence in the 17th minute with a pass from Maghnes Akliouche. Paris had thus scored four times in 16 minutes and 2 seconds, faster than any other team in a Champions League match. Villarreal never found an answer.
Fabian Ruiz commands the Parisian midfield
Having already scored against FC Barcelona, Fabián Ruiz once again made his mark on a great European night. The Spaniard scored his second goal in the 50th minute after a pass from Vitinha, then a precise finish to beat Renato Veiga and Péter Gulácsi.
UEFA awarded him the Man of the Match title. Beyond his brace, Ruiz contributed to the team's overall dominance alongside Neves and Vitinha. The trio monopolized possession, disrupted opposition transitions, and created a series of scoring opportunities for the Parisian attackers.
David Boly made his mark right from the start
Substituted in the 76th minute, David Boly needed just two minutes to score the sixth goal. Set up by João Neves, the young Parisian curled his shot across goal and celebrated his first Champions League appearance in the best possible way.
At 17 years and 285 days old, Boly became PSG's second youngest goalscorer in the competition, behind Warren Zaïre-Emery. His goal also symbolizes Luis Enrique's confidence in young players and the depth of a squad that maintains its intensity despite changes.
An unbridled European attack
Paris has now scored twenty goals after four matchdays. The club had already dominated Slovan Bratislava 6-1, Manchester City 4-2, and Barcelona 4-2. In each match, several players contribute to the attacking play, making the team difficult to contain.
PSG doesn't rely on a single striker. Neves, Doué, Mayulu, Ruiz, and Boly all scored against Villarreal, while Akliouche provided two assists. This variety allows the Parisians to attack through the middle, down the wings, or after winning the ball high up the pitch.
Villarreal are at the mercy of the champions
The Spanish club hoped to revive their campaign in front of their home crowd, but they quickly lost control. Their defenders struggled against PSG's overlapping runs and pressing. Even their few attempts to respond didn't truly trouble Matvey Safonov.
Paris, however, maintained their composure after the break. Instead of passively managing their lead, the European champions continued to press and search for a goal. This focus explains the scoreline and the continued clean sheet.
PSG takes a step closer to the top 8
With twelve points, Paris holds a valuable lead in the race for direct qualification to the round of 16. The home match against AS Roma on November 25th could bring the club even closer to its objective and allow it to manage the end of the league phase.
Before this match, PSG will return to Ligue 1 action on Saturday against Troyes at the Parc des Princes. They will then attempt to secure their eleventh consecutive victory in all competitions. After Villarreal's dominant performance, every opponent now knows the magnitude of the challenge.
